Most people in United States have gotten used to the typical .com domain names. Since most consumers are most comfortable with .com domain names, if your business appeals to the masses or some kind of broad markets, you are probably better off getting a .com domain name even if it isn’t a fantastic one. Despite popular belief, there are many pretty good ones that are still around that you can grab as long as you do enough digging and branding.

If you appeal solely to a technology audience or an audience of early technology adapters, you can risk it an get a different kind of domain name.

Personally, I always try to get a .com domain name. I don’t even bother with all the other variations because the truth is that mass consumers have not really gotten comfortable with the other kinds of domain names. They take a while to find, and many of the good ones are either taken or are expensive, but it is worth the effort to try to find a good .com domain name because it will pay off long term.
