Many people on my apps plan to market and promote their business by doing business card marketing. So I often get asked whether business card marketing still works. As with most things, the answer is yes and no. Additionally, the answer depends on the expectation of what it might mean for this kind of a marketing approach to work. In this article, I will explain what to expect, where business card marketing can be effective, and how to make business card marketing work to help you grow your business.
Strengths Of Business Card Marketing
Marketing with business cards has two distinct advantages that are typically shared by offline marketing strategies in general. The first advantage is that you are able to make a face to face connection. That can be very powerful and can become the beginning of a great, and long-term business relationship that may very well last far beyond your business. The second advantage of marketing with business cards is that in order to meet people to whom you can give business cards to, you have to either attend relevant networking events, or present at them.
There are a number of other advantages we can get from promoting our business this way. Here is a comprehensive video on offline marketing.
What To Expect
The problem with marketing your business with business cards is that it does not work on a large scale. This approach just does not scale because before we give someone a business card, we have to talk to them for at least a few minutes. So there is only so much of ourselves and of our time that we can devote to it.
Additionally, if you are selling an expensive product, it makes more sense to spend more time with people and forge real relationships. But if you are selling cheap products, then you need to focus on mass advertising. And you will not make large numbers of sales from business card marketing. The only way that could be accomplished is if you network with someone who can help you distribute your products.

After You Meet The Person
When you give people your business card, make sure to always ask for their business card as well. And don’t just ask for their business card. Show real interest in what that person is working on, and try to see whether you can help them. That is a part of building a fair relationship that can be beneficial to both parties.
After the event, preferably during the next day, send that person an follow up email. That shows that you are dependable and professional.
