In this tutorial I do a mobile app store comparison and compare the pros and cons on GooglePlay vs. Apple App Store vs. Amazon Kindle App Store vs. BlackBerry and the Windows Phone.

While Android and the GooglePlay marketplace have the highest volume of devices, most of those devices are from third world countries where people will find it more difficult afford to pay for anything you are selling on your apps. Plus the ads you may publish on your apps bring in orders of magnitude less revenue than they would in western countries.

The Amazon Kindle app store is a great app store if you already have an Android app which you are promoting on Google Play. Chances are that you will have to make only very small adjustments to your existing Android app to have that app be compatible with the Kindle app store. In my experience, only the in-app purchase code had to be re-written, and if you link to the app store when you ask for reviews, obviously that also has to be adjusted as well.

Depending on how your app makes money, you might even find that other Android app stores from different countries might make sense for your app.

I don’t try to explain whether the Apple App Store is better than Google Play. That is a little bit like comparing apples (pardon the pun) and oranges. They both have very strong advantages. If you are a mobile app entrepreneur, you must launch your app on either of these platforms. If you do, for the most part, you should be ok. A problem might occur if you launch on something like the Kindle, or even worse Blackberry or the NOOK. The NOOK is a dying platform, and in my mind, the Blackberry is overdue to go away. The mobile platform from Microsoft seems doomed as well. Almost all lucrative mobile app users are using Android and Google Play or the iOS apps from the Apple App Store.
