There are a couple of ways to answer this question. First of all, posting links in the comments sections of blogs or websites or even YouTube videos will not help your SEO. At this point it is a strategy that is more likely to get you penalized by Google rather than help you.
But posting good answers that are well thought out and insightful is still a very good thing to do for a number of reasons. First of all, blogging is a part of social media, and social media is a very large open forum where everyone is free to participate and exchange ideas.
You should leave interesting and insightful comments on blogs or websites, without leaving a link to anything that you are promoting. The blog comment should be for the purpose of engaging with whoever wrote the article or blog post. If it is a journalist or an investor or a business peer, and you want to get on their radar, and begin to network with them online, leaving interesting and insightful comments on their blog is a great way to start that relationship and stand out among the many people who want to network with those people.
Additionally, many blogs and forums allow you to have a signature. In the signature you can have a link to your website. But people will only really click it if your comment was interesting enough to get their interest. So make sure your original comment is very good. That is key to promoting yourself or your products on forums or blog comments.
