How to get people to follow you when you first start out on Twitter

In this tutorial, I explain how to get Twitter followers, and I focus especially on the case when you are first starting out with your Twitter account.

The single most important thing you must always do is to tweet interesting things. If you do that, people will follow you and retweet you, which will help you get even more Twitter followers. Once you do that, in the beginning, when you first open your account, you can import contact lists form your email and other social networks, and get your contacts there to follow you on Twitter.

The next thing to do in order to get Twitter followers is to engage people on Twitter in conversation. Follow people in whose ideas and tweets you may be interested in, and comment on things those people post. If you strike up a small relationship, they may follow you.

One thing I do to get Twitter followers is I use hashtags. Probably I use too many hashtags. If you want to see how I tweet, say hello to me on Twitter @genadinik and you will immediately notice that when I promote content, I use excessive hashtags. The reason I do that is to increase the discoverability for those tweets, get more exposure for the content I am promoting, and get more discoverability for my own account which results in me growing my Twitter follower count.
