How to Work from Home Successfully

It is becoming more and more usual for businesses to allow employees to work from home. There are several benefits to this option for both employer and employee, including a better work-life balance and, therefore, a happier worker, plus the employer can have their pick of the very best candidates rather than being restricted to those in the local area or within a commutable distance. Of course, if you run your own business, you won’t have to pay out for expensive premises, which can be particularly important if you’re just starting out.

Yet working from home isn’t always easy. You can become distracted, and there can be other pulls on your time. You might not feel you are actually ‘at work’ because you aren’t in an office away from your home somewhere, and this can mean that you become less productive over time. Here are some important rules to live by that will make working from home much easier.

Be Organized

With no one around you to micromanage your work or to keep giving you tasks to do, you might become disorganized. It can be easy to forget to do something or to spend too much time on one project while neglecting another. This can lead to substandard work or, more likely, it can mean you start working later and later to get everything done. Unlike in an office, when you shut things down and go home, if you work at home, it is easy to keep on going, and this is not good for you.

If you are going to be productive at home and get all of your work done in your set hours, it is best to use project management software. Use this software to input all the data about what needs to be done, who is carrying out the task, deadlines, and more, and you will have everything you need in one place, and it will be much easier to account for everything you need to do in the allotted time. You can even use this tool to keep in touch with colleagues and team members, which will also make work a lot easier.

Have A Set Routine

Something that can happen when you work from home is that any semblance of a routine can disappear. You might be able to get out of bed at any time you choose, or you might like to stay in your pajamas all day. You might go out for lunch with friends and then work late to catch up.

Although it is good to have a choice, and it’s good to be comfortable, it’s also important to remember that you are working, and you need to be both productive and professional. Make a routine for yourself just as you would if you were leaving home each day to go to work. Get up at a set time, have breakfast, get washed and dressed, and sit down to work at a time of your choosing that is the same every day. You can have a lunch break and shorter breaks throughout the day. When a certain time comes, close the computer and leave it until the next day.

Have A Dedicated Workspace

It is far better to have a dedicated workspace in your home than try to work from your bed, couch, kitchen table, or anywhere else that is used for other things. This is even truer if you live with others who may need the space you have started using as an office. Distractions become much more apparent.

Set up a proper workspace in a spare bedroom or a room that isn’t going to be used. Don’t use a high traffic area like a living room or kitchen as you won’t be able to concentrate. If you don’t have room in the house, think about installing a workroom in the yard.
