Social T-shirt Business -Interview With Founder Alex Genadinik
I want to introduce a unique company selling social tshirts called WaveIfYouLike.com which helps people connect using tshirts.
The idea of this brand is to wear a shirt with anything you are passionate about and when people see it on the street, if they are passionate about it too, they will wave at you and you will both share a smile and a special moment.
Q: How did you come up with this idea?
A: I was walking on the street and listening to music and I wish someone could rock out to my favorite music with me. But they didn’t know me or what I am listening to. So I thought it would be fun if they saw my shirt and if they were also geeks about the same music as I like, they would wave and it would feel great.
Q: What was the first design you made?
I made a t-shirt for myself with my favorite singer, Bulat Okudzhava. It was fun to wear, but he is from Russia, and I live in US so no one really knows him and so far no one waved to me. But few people did give me very long looks like they were about to wave, but then I passed them on the street and the moment was over.
Q: What’s the most popular t-shirt design now?
A: People like the wave if you like wine t-shirt for sure. It gets the most enthusiastic responses.
Q: What is the hardest part of starting a social t-shirt business?
A: People don’t know that there is such a thing so the marketing is more difficult. Even after people first hear about social t-shirts, they wonder what it is and it takes some time to sink in. So to sell a shirt, people have to hear about your business many times and warm up to the idea of social t-shirts.
Q: Is there a difference between funny t-shirts and social t-shirts?
A: Yes, a social t-shirt doesn’t have to be funny. But I try to make all my designs a little bit cute and funny so it’s also fun to wear.
