The meaning of Girl and Balloon by Bulat Okudzhava is unclear. However, one thing we do know is that it is a very sad song. It is also definitely about lost love. Maybe the husband of the woman in the song went off to war and was killed. This seems to be roughly what it was about.

It is also a hauntingly beautiful song. Only short, but very beautiful.

Alex’s Translation of Girl and Balloon

Just as with other songs that I have reviewed recently, Alex translates Girl and Balloon into English, thereby opening appreciation of the song up to a much wider audience. According to Amazon Alexa, there are an estimated 270 million Russian speakers in the world. However, there are also 1.3 billion English speakers. Therefore, this song can be enjoyed by a much wider audience.

This is also one of Alex’s shortest songs at only 1 minute and 20 seconds.

The Lyrics of Girl and Balloon

Girl is crying Balloon flew away People console her But balloon is gone.

Lady is crying Can’t find love People console her But balloon is gone.

Woman is crying Husband left People console her But balloon is gone.

Old woman crying Didn’t live enough Her balloon came back She wants something else.

Girl and Balloon, Written by Bulat Okudzhava, translated by Alex Genadinik

Meaning of Girl and Balloon

Although, I have already speculated as to the meaning, there is something else I find in the lyrics. The different versions are about different stages in life.

However, it is definitely another song about having love and then losing it. There is much in the way of grief and sorrow in the song.

Instruments Used

Again, the main instruments used are Alex’s voice and guitar. However, there is something else in the background that sounds like an organ.
