Is it good to be first to market with a product or an app or business idea?

In this tutorial I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being the first to market with a business idea for an app, website or any other kind of product.

Many people put a lot of focus on being the first to market with their business ideas because they think that if they are the first out of the gate with their ideas, that head start will help them run away from the rest of the competition and beat all the competition. In reality, that is rarely the case. Most companies who go first to market tend to spend quite a bit of money innovating and experimenting while the companies who come after them simply copy the ideas of the companies who came first, and get things done for a fraction of the price and in a fraction of the time it originally took. My advice is not to focus too much of being first to market, but rather to figure out how you can make your business competitive long term.

Many first-time entrepreneurs, or entrepreneurs who are early in their careers focus on the first to market advantage and allow that to drive many of their business decisions. While it sometimes advantageous to be the first company to market with a certain feature, service, or a product, in most cases the benefit of that is overblown. Consumers don’t ultimately care that much who was first. They do care that they get the best product or service for the best price. And if they recognize a brand (which may be because you got publicity from being first to market) they may trust a brand that they are familiar with more, and choose that company over another.

Getting Publicity From Being First To Market

If you are indeed first to market, one of the major advantages of that is that you can get publicity from various publications because you are presumably doing something new and innovative. That publicity can get you links to boost your SEO, and can get you brand recognition. Additionally, the publicity can get you actual clients. For most businesses, this would be my top reason for trying to be the first to market – so you can use that to get publicity, build your brand, and get clients.

3 Craigslist Marketing Strategies

In this tutorial I explain three different strategies for how you can run a business, and make money on Craigslist. The first strategy is an arbitrage model where you find a niche in which you can specialize. Once you have a product niche in which you specialize, you can buy products in that niche on Craigslist cheaply, and sell them more expensively. This strategy works even better if you are able to repair broken items, and then sell them for a price.

Free Giveaway Strategy On CraigsList Marketing

Another strategy is to do free promotions with your Amazon Kindle books, and post those free offers on CraigsList’s free section. This can help to drive your free Kindle book downloads, and ultimately rank highly on Amazon.

The strategy of selling or giving away free things on CraigsList as part of your overall marketing strategy is something that can be applied to much of online marketing. Here is why. Much of online marketing is algorithm based gaming of search engines. And search engines like to see rapid growth of whatever your product is. So if you can funnel many people to your product from your CraigsList marketing, it will cause a spike in traffic or sales to be seen by the search engine on which you are trying to rank, and that can help you boost sales there.

Optimizing Your Title And Description On CraigsList

Lastly, you must make sure that your listing is optimized with a great headline, description, and photos. A title of your listing should contain proper keywords because many people searching Craigslist often use filters, and you must make sure that you use keywords that will ensure that your listing will show up even if people filter by keywords.

One thing I want to mention is that I keep being surprised by how many people don’t take care of the title and description in their CraigsList listings. You would think that it is the simplest thing to adjust, but many people neglect it. Don’t be one of those people, and make the title and description of your Craigslist postings work to your advantage.

Always Beware Of Scammers On CraigsList

There are many ways to make money on Craigslist, but I want to point out that there are also many scammers on that site. Be careful of buying or selling to people when the situation seems too good to be true.

Event marketing and handing out your business cards is a fantastic way to promote your business. But there are additional offline marketing strategies you can use to promote whatever it is you are promoting.  You can do flier marketing, door to door marketing, and even word of mouth marketing.

This site’s approach to heritage is unlike other heritage websites which traditionally simply focused on building heritage trees of people’s ancestry.
