When you talk about your company, you want to be brief and extremely clear. This helps people quickly understand your business and ask more questions if they are interested.

Here is a video tutorial on how to pitch your business. Below the video you will find a template for creating your own business pitch and many more resources to help you.

Here is a template for how you can explain your company very clearly at a high level in about 30 seconds. There are 3 to 5 main points you need to cover based on how much you want to divulge.

My Book And Course To Help You Start A Business

After examining questions from 300,000 entrepreneurs, I wrote a book on how to go from business ideas to starting a great business. Here is more about the book on this blog and here is the book on Amazon.

Additionally, some of the lectures in this blog post are sample lectures from my full course on starting a business. Here is the link (with a discount) to the full course that can help to guide you in starting your business.

What Top 3 Mistakes Not To Make

When you are first meeting people, don’t make a common mistake that many first-time entrepreneurs make. First time entrepreneurs often go into a long-winded monologue, and babble about how awesome their new business is, and how many cool features their app or product has. Don’t do that. Make your quick pitch, and either wait for a response in silence, or ask the person you are talking to about what they are working on.

The second mistake first-time entrepreneurs make is they take out their phone and try to show their website, app or product to the person they are talking to. This puts the person you are talking to in an uncomfortable position because they are likely not interested enough to want to take your guided tour full of babble. Don’t rush to show your product, website or app. Wait for the person you are talking to to build up enough interest so that they ask you how they can see your product, and then show it to them.

The third mistake people often make before doing their business presentation or even before discussing any part of their company is asking the person they are presenting to, to sign an NDA (non disclosure agreement). In some cases an NDA may be appropriate, but in most cases, the NDA is a waste of time legal document that wastes both parties time and distract them from talking about the actual business they are there to discuss in the first place. The NDA is often a negative distraction that in some cases can make you look like an amateur. Plus it prevents you from moving forward in your conversation and pitching your company.

Purpose Of The Business Pitch

The most important thing your pitch needs to accomplish is to be clear. If it is not clear, and the person listening to the pitch does not understand it, then the whole point of pitching the business to them is lost. So clarity is the number one priority. That is why the pitch examples are so short and to the point. Once you are able to explain your business clearly, you can add various components to your business pitch such as how you will make money, the competition, and more about the product and the secret sauce.

But remember that as you add various components to your pitch, the level of clarity must remain very high. Also, once you become more comfortable with pitching the business, you can try to add humor, or make the pitch personalized to the listener, or be inspirational in some way.

Also, do not forget to stop at various junctures to see whether your listener has questions about a particular part of your pitch. They may want to take the conversation in a different direction if something in your pitch sparked an interest.

Longer Business Pitches

If your initial pitch goes well, you may engage in further conversation with whoever you are pitching. If they are an investor, they might invite you to give them a longer pitch of about 5-10 minutes and ask for a business plan or a slide deck presentation.

Starting A Business? Take My Business Course

After coaching over 1,000 entrepreneurs and seeing the challenges faced by the 400,000 entrepreneurs on my mobile business apps, I got a very deep understanding of exactly the issues faced by entrepreneurs, put them together, and made them into a business course. Precisely because my course comes from working with entrepreneurs just like you, I am certain that many issues in the course are exactly the things you are currently facing, or will be facing soon. Check out the curriculum of my business starting course on Udemy and see if the course is right for you. The course is mostly video. If you prefer to read, I also wrote a book that teaches you how to start a business. Here is that business idea book on Amazon.

Here is a list of 60 of my Udemy courses with discount coupons for all of them.

Giving Your Business Pitch At Event Presentations

As your business grows, you may need to present your business at events. The typical time a business gets to present is about 3-5 minutes. In these 3-5 minutes, you must go over the basics as you would in your 1-minute pitch, but also add more depth about the product, your secret sauce, and possibly your competitive environment and what makes your business different.

Additionally, if you promote your business at events by handing out business cards, take a look at these videos for how to do that effectively.

Pitching Your Business To Investors To Raise Money?

If you are working on your business pitch in order to raise money, you may be interested in my online course that teaches you ten different strategies to raise money. Here is the fundraising course on Udemy, and here is more information about the course on this blog.

The fundraising course goes over ten different ways to raise money for your business. The first four are from institutions via loans, grants, investment and donations. And the other six strategies have more to do with hustling and being creative.

Additionally, you can also get my fundraising book on Amazon.

Show Your Product In Addition To The Pitch

It is much more powerful if you can show something to someone rather than just telling them about it. For that reason, it is good to have a website that you can show. Additionally, once you have a website, you can begin promoting your business on the web.

Here is a tutorial for how to get a free domain name, and here is one on how to set up a website quickly and cheaply. And here is a tutorial for how to begin doing online marketing to promote your site.

When You Have More Time To Do Your Business Pitch

If you are presenting your business on stage at an event or to an investor, you might have as much as three to five minutes to present your business. In these cases you may also have a powerpoint presentation that you can use to reinforce what you are saying and/or access to the Internet that you can use to walk your listeners and viewers through a use case.

When you have more time to do your pitch, you can work a few elements into your pitch. For example, you can choose a use case that is most telling of how people will use your product or service, and literally show your audience how your product or service will be used by your target users. You can also make elements of your pitch personal to whoever is going to be listening or watching your pitch if you know who that will be beforehand. You can even include humor in your presentation.

Whatever you do, anticipate the important questions that your audience may be thinking, and work it into your presentation to answer as many questions as possible that your audience may have.
